Police believe a Las Vegas PRIDE Parade float may have killed a man, community claims disorganization

  • November 10, 2019 - 11:38pm

Police believe a man may have been killed by a Las Vegas PRIDE Parade float.

According to information released by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, on October 12, 2019, the morning after the Las Vegas PRIDE Parade, at approximately 9:18 a.m., a 911 call received by the LVMPD 911 dispatch center, reported a deceased male in the desert lot of 710 S. Casino Center Boulevard.

When police officers arrived they found the body of a 62-year-old man, who has not yet been publicly identified. The body was covered in a blue tarp in the middle of the desert lot and was determined to be “beyond medical treatment.”

Police findings have included evidence and witness statements providing them with additional information they hope will help further an investigation.

The evidence and witness statements have indicated that the deceased man was sleeping under that blue tarp on the evening of the Las Vegas PRIDE Parade where tire tracks were also found near the body.

According to detailed information released by the LVMPD, immediately following the Las Vegas PRIDE Parade, on October 11, 2019, at approximately 9:30 p.m., “a light-colored extended cab pickup truck with a flatbed trailer that was being used for a float during the Las Vegas Pride Parade entered the desert lot.”

“The occupants of the truck removed the decorations from the trailer loading it into the bed of the pickup truck.” The pickup truck then exited the desert lot traveling southbound on S. Casino Center Boulevard.

LGBTQ+ community members have been vocal in regards to disorganization towards the end of the Las Vegas PRIDE Parade, claiming a lack of guidance.

One community member on social media claimed, “The parade was shocking as soon as you go around the corner it was over get out of the street a truck is coming hit the side walks losers said the protesters.” Another community member responded, “It did abruptly end with nobody there to guide us...”

If you have any information about this incident, you’re urged to call the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Collision Investigation Section at (702) 828-4060. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555, or visit crimestoppersOfNV.com.

Trans community members are still having problems at the Gay & Lesbian Center

Trans community members are still having problems at the Gay & Lesbian Center

  • November 10, 2019 - 11:15pm

Documents shared with Fab Las Vegas have included a formal complaint against The Center.

The detailed and over 3000+ word complaint by Toni W., a former Facilities & Security Manager alleges that her termination from The Center was unlawful involving discrimination in regards to her sexual orientation and gender identity. Toni identifies as a transwoman and has made it clear that she prefers genetic females over males.

The complaint against the organization and specifically two staff members at The Center, state Toni was repeatedly ignored when requesting an increase in security measures for a safer environment. She stated, “This inaction has also led to permanent disfigurement of my left arm.”

Security measures requested by Toni included metal detectors, two-way radios, and safety equipment at The Center. Concerns were validated on Thursday, August 8th when the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested a man named Conor Climo. He was arrested after a four-month-long investigation into domestic terrorism activities he was planning to execute against the Jewish and LGBTQIA+ community.

The complaint states that a staff member from the organization committed an “act of retaliation” in regards to the termination. Toni has responded by filing a complaint with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) alleging a violation of the Federal Whistleblower Protection Act.

This is not the first time The Center has had issues with transgender employees. In September of 2018, trans community members called for a boycott of The Center, organizing a protest demonstration outside their building with chants of, “Boycott The Center” and “I stand with Blue.” Blue M., The Center’s former Transgender Programs Manager, alleges he and his husband Owen were approached by a staff member from The Center at a 2018 Genderfest event where they were asked to remove their child from the room because a staff member was bothered by them being there.

According to Blue, Owen filed a grievance with a member of the board of directors with The Center. Only an hour after sending the grievance via email, Blue says he was terminated.

Allegedly, the termination was claimed to be from comments he made publicly in regard to unacceptable behavior by Las Vegas Pride towards the transgender community. Blue believes the complaint is what brought on his termination. He explained, “The Center has no social media policy, and I was fired for violating a policy that doesn’t exist.” Blue also claims that The Center has been taking donations from transphobic entities, he says it sends a message that money is more important to them than people. He said, “The Center has consistently shown a lack of respect for their trans community, and for their trans employees.”

According to another trans community member Amy W., she was asked to be the new Transgender Program Manager the day after Blue was let go. She says she agreed to take on the new position as long as the title would be interim and with her volunteer status intact. The staff member agreed to those conditions. Amy says a week later an emailed response from that same staff member challenged the new title indicating that they never gave approval for her to use it. She said, “I felt used and lied to. I never returned to The Center as to me they cannot be trusted.”

As for Toni, she continues to refute the claim that she was a “weak leader” as she says was stated to her by a staff member. She says, “I have helped numerous community and non-community members with issues ranging from obtaining employment, escaping sex trafficking, to uncovering and reporting a child pornography ring.”

According to Toni, her former staff members were constantly told by leadership, “Don’t tell Toni.” Despite that she claims they always approached her with everything. “Why? Because I am a leader who genuinely believes in the words honor, code, and loyalty and those words are reflected in my everyday leadership,” she said.

Some of her accomplishments include being the first transgender woman to serve as an advisor to Sheriff Joseph Lombardo on the Sheriff’s Multicultural Advisory Council.

The first transgender woman to join LVMPD’s R.E.C.A.P. (Rebuilding Every Community Around Peace), normally a faith-based organization.

The first transgender woman to present on transgender culture in the LVMPD Academy.

Assisting Sgt. Kevin Metcalf (ret.) of the San Jose Police Department to re-write the training guidelines for transgender/gender-nonconforming individuals for the SJPD Academy.

Creating a dialogue and working relationship with the North Las Vegas Police Department.

Assisting the LVMPD Recruiting and Human Resource Department to re-write policies for the hiring and training of transgender individuals.

One of the very few transgender women to attend and graduate the FBI Citizen’s Academy.

She created and utilized a partnership with The Foundation for an Independent Tomorrow to assist people, community or non-community, to gain employment.

Assisting numerous people to obtain employment or vocational training.

Assisting, with police intervention, at least one dozen women and transwomen escape sex trafficking.

Taking 20 people to various drug rehabilitation centers because they trusted her to help them.

Despite her termination, the Undersheriff of Clark County has invited her to stay on the Multicultural Advisory Council.

Southern Nevada Counter-Terrorism Center Certified Fusion Liaison Officer a non-law enforcement representative invited to attend the U.S, Department of Justice-Office of The U.S. Attorney Project Safe Neighborhood Summit.

Toni has also been asked by the head of LVMPD Corrections Bureau Professional Standards to assist in re-writing inmate policies for LGBTQ inmates.

On October 20, Fab Las Vegas requested a response from The Center in regards to the written complaint by Toni.

On October 28, The Center sent the following statement, “For more than 25 years, The Center has remained committed to championing the well-being and positive image of the LGBTQ community and low to moderate income residents. While we cannot address any specific issue involving personnel or an ongoing investigation, we are unequivocally committed to our mission of furthering human rights for all.”

Community complains their vehicles are constantly vandalized in LGBTQ+ “Loop”

Community complains their vehicles are constantly vandalized in LGBTQ+ “Loop”

  • October 4, 2019 - 4:18am

Parking has always been complicated for a group of LGBTQ+ businesses located at Paradise Rd. and E. Naples Dr. in an area commonly referred to as the “Loop.”

Historically the businesses have always been very limited in their parking. In the past, parking lot wars have been waged by towing cars of individuals that park in a space designated for one bar that happens to walk over to a competing bar or nightclub.

The businesses which include, FreeZone, Quadz Video Bar, Piranha, Get Booked, Office Bar and Double Down, found a temporary fix to the parking problem. A lot situated behind Quadz Video Bar has been temporarily leased and shared by businesses in the surrounding area.

The lease seemed a required move after land adjacent to Piranha Nightclub, also owned by McCarran airport, was no longer available for parking. The former dirt lot was once available for their patrons offering parking spaces close in proximity to the venue. This lot was regularly monitored and supervised by nightlife staff. A lot that is no longer available.

Now customers are complaining about the safety and the damage to their vehicles in this leased hidden lot behind Quadz.

Stories of weekly crimes in the area have flooded social media. Patrons complaining that there is insufficient security, cameras, and lighting protecting their vehicles. Many have refused to park their cars in the risky parking lot area any longer.

On any given night over twenty vehicles have had their glass windows shattered. Some of the larger incidents have only been months apart. Other patrons have repeated complaints that their vehicles have had their trunks broken into.

Community members are saying enough is enough. When asked about the issue, frequent patron David Martinez stated, “I refuse to continue to drive my car to these places if this is going to continue to happen. We already put up with the smell of cigarettes. Can we at least have safe parking?”

Patrons have stated that these crimes have been happening well over a year.

Some community members have learned to adapt, utilizing rideshare services from home or safer parking lots.

Other customers are known to visit the area along with their cannabis purchases from a nearby 24/7 dispensary.

The dispensary, MedMen, has been offering free arranged rideshare services to customers of their store. The dispensary is walking distance to the LGBTQ+ businesses on Paradise Road.

Community member Erick Silva saved seven lives at Route 91 festival before he was killed

  • October 4, 2019 - 12:30am

It’s been two years since the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in the history of the United States happened in this city we call home, Las Vegas.

58 innocent lives were lost that night, October 1, 2017, at the Route 91 festival, including community member Erick Silva. Erick was working as festival security on that 1 October night that would claim his life.

Back on February 11, 2013, Erick shares a post on our Facebook community page, that he is looking for more friends in Las Vegas. He has often been described by others as more than just a friend, described as a giver who longed to serve his community.

In an interview with the Review-Journal Ericks' best friend, Tylaicha Price recalled a drive she had with him passing out water bottles to homeless people, “It wasn’t out of character for Erick to put others before himself,” she said. “He liked seeing people happy. It was part of his magnetic personality.”

His mother, Angelica Cervantes, describes him as a best friend, having a very close relationship full of jokes, laughs and surprise gifts. Angelica always worried about the day he would move out and leave her, he was her everything, her heart, and soul, her best friend.

Security was a natural fit for Erick as he hoped to one day be a police officer, he longed to help people. Erick also had a great sense of humor, his mother remembered him setting up fake delivered packages outside of his home luring unsuspecting thieves into a trap involving a handwritten message, the entire exchange set to be recorded on camera.

Most of all Erick is remembered as a hero who saved several concertgoers. In a FOX5 Las Vegas video, best friend Amanda Marie Cavero says, “he saved seven lives that night before he lost his.”

In its second year, an annual tribute event honoring Erick Silva for his heroism will be held on Friday, October 11 at 4 pm inside the East Las Vegas Community Center at 250 N. Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89104. Members from across the Vegas community have reached out to support the event.

Many entertainers who were present or affected by the Route 91 tragedy have created songs honoring and memorializing the many victims. One artist is Pat Dalton Amico who has written songs “58 Angels” and “Forever Family.” Another artist, Oscar Roman has performed and recorded several songs honoring Erick Silva with the help of his mother in creating the lyrics. The songs, “Las Vegas Still Strong,” “Un Heroe en Las Vegas” and “Tu Nombre Y Tu Historia” are in both English and Spanish.

Lately, Erick Silva’s story reached Presidential Candidate Sen. Kamala Harris who met his mother Angelica Cervantes. Kamala embraced Angelica as she cried saying, “It’s ok if you cry. It’s good to cry sometimes. It’s ok. It’s emotion. It’s good to have emotion. That’s what gives us the fight.”

Recently, Senator Harris has continued to communicate plans to take action on gun violence.

Since the Route 91 tragedy, outdoor festivals have continued to see a decline in attendance and are still being the target of mass shootings. Another mass shooting occurred at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California, on July 28, 2019, killing several attendees. In another local incident, Conor Climo, was arrested by the FBI and charged in federal court for planning to attack LGBTQ and Jewish communities in Las Vegas.

Cathy Woods

Exonerated LGBTQ Reno woman gets $3 million in compensation

  • September 2, 2019 - 7:29pm

Cathy Woods of Reno was exonerated after 35 years behind bars, becoming the longest-ever wrongfully incarcerated woman in U.S. history. Now after seeking compensation, she was granted $3 million in a partial settlement of a federal civil rights lawsuit on Aug. 27.

Reports the Los Angeles Times:

Cathy Woods, 68, will continue to seek additional damages from the city of Reno and former detectives she accuses of coercing a fabricated confession from her while she was a patient at a Louisiana mental hospital in 1979, according to her lawyer, Elizabeth Wang. … Woods, who now lives with relatives near the city of Anacortes, Wash., was the longest-ever wrongfully incarcerated woman in U.S. history, according to the National Registry of Exonerations.

Cleared by DNA, Woods had previously been convicted of the murder of UNR coed Michelle Mitchell, whose body was found in a garage near the university on Feb. 24, 1976, hands tied, throat slit.

It had the makings of a cold case until three years later when “word came that a patient in a Louisiana mental health institute had told a nurse about a murder in Reno,” reports KOLO.

A Reno Police detective went to Louisiana and interviewed Woods and, though that interview was not recorded, it was considered a confession… Returned to Reno, she was convicted. That result was thrown out on appeal. She was tried a second time and convicted again.

The evidence against Woods was always lacking. Footprints at the scene did not match her shoe size, and the descriptions of someone seen in the area pointed to a man taller than Woods. But “mentally unable to assist in her defense,” she was also out as a lesbian at a time when that was a felony in Nevada–factors many experts would say had influence in her eventual conviction.

Then, however, came the turnaround moment in the case. Reports KOLO:

The evidence in the case remained secure in a special room underneath the courthouse and--when it was reexamined DNA was found on a cigarette butt left at the scene. … It wasn't hers, in fact, it wasn't a woman's. It was a man's linked to a string of murders of young women in the Bay Area in 1976. He was eventually identified as Rodney Halbower who happened to be in Reno for a hearing on the attempted murder of another woman in February of 1976.

Halbower, who was convicted last year of two of the Bay Area murders, has not been tried in a Nevada court for Mitchell's murder. But in 2015, Woods was finally released.

Rev. Robert E. Fowler Sr.

Democratic presidential hopefuls visit homophobic Vegas preacher

  • September 2, 2019 - 7:07pm

Senators Kamala Harris (D-CA), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) recently made campaign stops at Victory Missionary Baptist Church in Las Vegas, whose minister has said being gay is "enough to send you to hell."

Harris and Booker attended services at the church in early August, whereas Sanders held a town hall there in July. But now the presidential hopefuls are facing criticism over comments made by Rev. Robert E. Fowler Sr., Victory Missionary's pastor.

On a 2013 episode of KNPR's “State of Nevada,” he stated that "we [at Victory Missionary] don't believe that there's any one sin that's greater than anything else… Whether you commit adultery, whether you commit fornication, whether you're a child molester, you gossip, you lie, you cheat on your taxes, you don't pay your tithes, things of that nature… All of that is wrapped together as sin, along with homosexuality.”

Now as recently as August, he again expressed his feelings on the matter in an interview with Bay Area News Group.

"Homosexuality, adultery, fornication, those are all sexual sins addressed in scripture," he said. "Any sin, if you break the law in one area, you've broken it in all areas. If you mess up in one area, that's enough to send you to hell—so any sin is pretty bad for me."

In statements to The Advocate, Harris, Booker and Sanders have since distanced themselves from Fowler.

"She does not share his views,” said a spokesperson for Harris. "Senator Harris' support and advocacy for LGBTQ equality has been unwavering throughout her career and will continue when elected President."

"Cory does not share these views,” reads a campaign statement. “Throughout his career, Cory has been a consistent fighter for the rights of LGBTQ people.”

"Senator Sanders has the longest history of any candidate fighting for LGBTQ+ equality and equal rights for all. Senator Sanders believes we must end discrimination in all forms and does not share these views,” reads Sanders’ campaign statement.

An interesting twist in this story is that openly gay Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg was also in Las Vegas around the same time as Harris and Booker. While campaigning, he said Nevadans had “a thumb on the scale” of the 2020 race.

“It doesn’t get more different from the current occupant of the Oval Office than a laid back, young, intellectual, gay, naval war veteran who’s the mayor of a Midwestern city,” the South Bend, Indiana mayor also shared.

Die Antwood Homophobia

Die Antwoord pulled from Life is Beautiful over homophobic remarks

  • September 2, 2019 - 6:51pm

Electro-rap duo Die Antwoord have been pulled from the Life is Beautiful lineup seemingly over alleged past homophobic comments.

An old video has come back to haunt the South African group, who will now miss one of Las Vegas’ biggest music festivals.

The duo played the event in 2016, but will be missing this year’s festival, which is scheduled to run between Sept. 20 and 23.

At the time of this writing, Life is Beautiful organizers and Die Antwoord had not issued a statement about the cancelled appearance. But “Die Antwoord no longer is listed among the performers on the Life is Beautiful website, nor is the festival listed among Die Antwoord’s tour dates on the group’s website,” writes the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Other festivals have followed suit and dropped Die Antwoord as well, such as Riot Fest in Chicago.

The controversial video shows group members Yolandi Visser and Ninja directing homophobic slurs at and physically assaulting openly gay DJ Andy Butler of Hercules and Love Affair.

Writes Out:

In a YouTube video published by former Die Antwoord videographer Ben Crossman, Ninja is seen spitting in Butler’s face at the 2012 Future Music Festival in Adelaide, Australia. Butler retaliates by throwing a drink and the two end up tussling off-camera. Visser can be heard in the background saying: “f*ggots are fighting, this is so cute” and “look at the f*ggot... run f*ggot run... run for your life, b*tch” when Butler attempts to leave.

After the video surfaced online, Die Antwoord immediately began to lose festival bookings. Ninja responded to the controversy by claiming on Facebook that Crossman had “cleverly edited this video clip to make it seem like me and Yolandi committed a hate crime towards a person because they are gay.” He says Crossman took part in the beating as well and that Butler’s sexuality had nothing to do with the fight.

In the video, the band claims Butler, who has yet to make a statement, sexually assaulted Visser.

Todd Glass

Out comedian Todd Glass headlining Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club

  • September 2, 2019 - 6:39pm

Gay comic Todd Glass will be a headliner at Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club at The LINQ Promenade, it’s been announced.

Glass is perhaps best known for his 2018 Netflix special Todd Glass: Act Happy and appearances on Last Comic Standing and for his 2001 Comedy Central Presents special. He’s also appeared regularly on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and a string of other talk shows.

Speaking of Kimmel, the comedian was raised in Las Vegas from the age of nine and even attended UNLV for a year. That history is likely what made Sin City the perfect home for his Comedy Club, which he curated and designed.

Describes a press release:

Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club features late night shows, surprise guests, high-end casual cuisine and memorabilia. Complete with an expandable showroom that seats up to 300 guests, the dual-level 8,000 square-foot venue provides an optimal setting for both the audience and performers alike. Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club offers performances Thursday through Sunday at 8pm with additional shows at 10pm on select days. The bar and lounge located on the floor level of the club opens at 4pm on show nights. The club showcases comedians ranging from household names to up-and-coming talent curated by Kimmel and his team.

Glass is set to perform in Vegas on Sept. 26 and 29 at 8pm, and on Sept. 27 and 28 at both 8pm and 10pm.

The stand-up comic came out as gay in 2012 while on the podcast WTF with Marc Maron

“I cannot listen to stories about kids killing themselves any longer without thinking [to myself], ‘When are you going to have a little blood on your shirt for not being honest about who you are?’” he reasoned at the time.

Glass, who’s released several comedy albums, also has his own widely popular podcast, The Todd Glass Show, which debuted in 2011.

He also published a book in 2014, hilariously titled “The Todd Glass Situation: A Bunch of Lies about My Personal Life and a Bunch of True Stories about My 30-Year Career in Stand-Up Comedy.”
